In South Africa, a driver s licence isn t difficult to obtain. No formal training
is required and few drivers take any. A learner s permit can be obtained at
age 17 on completion of a knowledge test. A full driver s licence can be obtained
at age 18 by passing a road test. No waiting period is required between the
learner s permit and the road test once the applicant is 18 years old.
Training is offered by several groups. Private driving schools, under the
auspices of the South African Institute of Driving instructors, cater to the
individual learner driver. Groups such as the Institute of Advanced Motorists,
BMW of South Africa, and the AA Foundation provide more advanced training.
The School Driver Education Program SDEP, which provides theory as well
as behind-the-wheel training, was introduced at a Capetown high school in 1984.
Since then it has escalated into a national program offered at almost 700 schools
throughout the republic. See another Drivers.com article entitled South

The rapid growth in SDEPs was spurred by growth in traffic, a potent mix of
third and first world road users, and huge problems caused by unschooled drivers
entering the traffic system. Many of the new drivers entered with little knowledge
about their vehicles or the conventions and procedures that provide for an
orderly flow of traffic. The SDEPs are aimed at diffusing more sophisticated
traffic and driving knowledge through the road user population.
We are ensuring a generation of safer road users who will pass on their abilities, says
safety researcher Pieter Venter of Potchefstroom Christian University s Centre
for Education in Traffic Safety, which acts as a research and training resource
for the school programs.
Curriculum
Currently SDEPs provide 17 hours of classroom education and six hours or 100
km behind-the-wheel instruction. The curriculum includes a basic introduction
that alerts pupils to factors such as the road-worthiness of the car, stopping
distances, and basic vehicle control. The behind-the-wheel time covers motoring
techniques such as gear changing and following distances. Driving theory includes
the IPDE decision-making system, and the influence of factors such as alcohol,
drugs and emotions.
The programs are offered after school hours a.m. - p.m. but Venter
hopes they will soon be recognized as a regular part of the school curriculum
and that the theory portion will be included in the school day.

how to work through the hill - incline start.
What a load of rubbish.
Since when can we hurt anyone or their insurance if we linger on the hill without the handbrake applied I don t even roll down hill and I have failed 13 times. Well acc. to K-53 this is what you must do:
1. Pull away in 1st, please do observations, and go up hill.
2. Where you park behind the STOP-line.
3. Come to a stop, handbrake goes up, neutral. Feet off everything as you have got nothing to hide your car is thus stationary.
4. TRAFFIC COP SAYS: I am not a COFFEE TRAP stop calling me that. - NOT.
Actually they say or take a hint and PULL AWAY as normal but with control.
5. 1st gear, release clutch with acceleration where you feel your car will go over the hill. You can t fail K53 FOR OVER REVING. When you know you have control for your car to go forward -DROP THE HANDBRAKE. With proper cluth control watch how you drive down the hill don t forget to always pull away with observations. And end your move with control.
Everyone needs to take a step back and remember that K53 may be done away with in SA.
You only need to have a genuine problem in parallel parking. If you have a problem with anything else work through it.
Here are my tips for parallel: when you lock in from the right only clear the car behind you s right front light and lock out.
From left you need to clear the left light plus a piece of the curb about a metre and lock out.
These are for cars when the driver is seated on the right like most SA cars.

The easiest way to obtain a driver s licence is to first take the South African Learner s Licence exam and then drive with a instructor from the South Africa Institute of Driving Instructors. At most, it should take you a month from end to finish and it isn t too hard.
To practice for your Learner s Licence, the best way is to sign up at a local test centre they are different in each province so just google them and give them a call and then practice questions using one of the online practice websites. to book for your learners licence in south africa you need:
2 black and white photos of yourself,
a copy of your south african identity book, and your actual south african identity book. you fill out a form, go for an eye test, book a date to write your test and then pay R108. This can all be easily done in a few hours in langlaagte for example. if you cannot produce a south african identity document you will not be able to do anything.

It s not true. A new law will come to effect on the 1st Feb, having already been issued with your licence, you are exempt from the law. It will only apply to licences issued after the 1st. There are still some discrepencies with the law, but nonetheless it will be enforced.

I m not from the life is unfair school of thought. And I generally believe that honesty is the best policy. BUT I have learned - the hard way - that it can make life very difficult in SA.
I arrived back in SA in late 2007 - after 24 years away - full of passion to be back in the land I love. I presented my old ID book, complete with drivers licence, in order to change it over to the new photo card version. The clerk asked me whether I had been is SA at any time between 1997 and 2002. After thinking about it, I replied yes. I was then told that that fact disqualified me from swapping over to the new licence. Apparently I should have done it when I was here. My protests about the fact that my 2002 visit was due to my dad losing his battle with cancer and that he died while I was here and I then stayed to attend the funeral I was here for 2 and a half weeks in total fell on deaf ears. Over the next few days, my disbelief was channelled into finding another way that I could legally drive here. To my relief, I learned - from phone calls to both the Traffic Dept and an insurance company - that my Australian licence was, indeed, recognised here as a valid licence. With that knowledge, I bought a car and have been here since then.
But then I had a bad accident and my car has been written off. Imagine my horror when told that my Australian licence was only valid for the first 12 months. In that time, I was supposed to have had it swapped over to a SA licence. Obviously no-one had made that clear when I originally asked. GREAT. No more car, no insurance payout, no more valid licence.
Sometimes I wonder about why I m still so positive about living in this country. If only I d lied about being in SA for my father s death/funeral.

I have recently paid R1500.00 to the owner of B B Driving School to get an early Leaners license date for a friend. He also promote that he can get you the Leaners in 2 days quarenteed, and that he have friends in the Test Stations and that you can not fail.
He operate in BENONI and LANGLAAGTE, not sure about the other stations.
Well the money was paid and with little preparation my friend fail the test.
He claimed that a white man took yhe test papers and his friends could not do anything.
I then realise that any person can get an early date at WESTHOVEN you book on a Monday and you write your test on the Wednesday. I did my code 1 and 3 last week and the cost was R200.00.
Please be carefull to pay any money to these guys as it is a scam.

All you people talking about buying your licence disgust me. You should be ashamed of yourselves for even thinking of such a thing. Yes our service delivery from government departments in SA suck, yes the lines are time consuming and fustrating. but this is the country we live in, it does not mean you should resort to breaking the law and risking everyone elses life on the road.. Sashen. You are legally allowed to ride a bike up to 125cc on SA roads from the age of 16 if you ve passed your learners and later your drivers. From the age of 18 you can upgrade to a bigger bike 125cc up but you will have to do your learners and drivers all over again. I am from SA and this article is misleading - for example few drivers take any - what a load of BS.
It is possible to obtain a learners at 17 and a drivers at 18.
The system comes from the old apartheid days where I guess it was assumed most people were able to learn at 17 i.e. have access to a car at that age.
You CANNOT legally get a license without any formal training unless you do it in a 1 horse town and have had really good guidance from someone who knows what the tester is looking for, so it is still training I guess.
What exactly is a 1st world and a 3rd world road user.

Went for my drivers licence again. Fifth attempt. At Xavier Junction. I had the sweetest, nicest, polite examiner you can find in SA. However, it doesnt take away the fact that I failed. Again. Fifth time now.

Well well comrades, I ve just spent the last two days reading all the preceding comments, and I must say that its been quite insightful.
Obtaining your drivers licence in this country through legitimate channels is a challenge on its own, but these diseased officials maak die pap dik, as the Afrikaans saying goes.
I ve attempted my drivers licence four times already, and in all fairness, I ve only genuinely failed once, and that was when I went for my first time. Damn nerves made me smack the poles. Eish. But it doesnt take away the fact that these officials are characteristically inhumane in the manner in which they conduct themselves in the midst of would-be drivers.
There is this new testing place called Xavier Junction, near Gold Reef City, and boy oh boy they fork out the same proverbial like all testing station in South Africa.
Like, this last time I went there, this dude called Lands starts asking of questions like: Where do you work. Whats you home language. What do your parents do for a living. Whose car are you driving. Is it a private car or is it a driving school car. etc etc
You know, like that. You see, he s trying to figure out if you re loaded. Anyway, later on he tells me to in and wait for him at the car so we can start the test, but as I walk I look back and I see him chatting to one of his buddies and I figure out that they re probably debating as to whether I should be failed or not.
Needless to say, he failed me in the yard test because apparently I didnt do the 5 point check or signal with my indicators.

Perhaps it would be appropriate for of to mention at this stage that Im black. And having said that, it is with profound sadness that I have to say that these black officials - these brothers from another mother - are a corrupt lot, especially when they see that you are a young person they shamelessly take advantage of you. And I guess its true what Mandoza said in his song: A black man does not want to see another black man succeed.

It is virtually impossible to get a legal licence except if you kiss some ass, bribe or have exceptional driving skills.
When doing the practical test, be humble and show no fear or stress. Show your confidence and you will pass.
Booking the actual test is something that will frustrate you more than your mother in-law.

I am a driving instructor for the last 23 years and I can tell you that it is not always the system that is wrong. The people who make the effort to prepare themselves for the test by taking enough driving lessons pass the test the first time. Some people book themselves for a drivers test and then they had never driven a car or truck. These people cannot pass a test by taking only 5 or 10 lessons. Brain dead people also take long to learn. Young people who can concentrate learn much quicker and they pass very easy. Today we had a grade 12 boy who passed his license with only a 5 point penalty in the yard test and 35 point penalty on the road test, and I can assure you that there were no bribes involved. Go to a driving school and do the license the legal way.

Black officers fail black young drivers because you didnt pay bribe like others.White officers fail you cos they are so impatient with having to sit with a darkie for that long.One white officer failed me within 8 minutes and wrote on the report, she s too slow might you,i was still in the yard and about to finish the last parking and i wud be done in half the 20 min set for yard test. And as if dat wasnt enough, he goes on saying, anyway, IF you passed, whose car were you going to drive. Now questions like, Whos ur father. where is he working, whos ur mother. blah blah i was so furious i had to puke after he left. The only thing i regret is, why didnt i puke on his face. yakk i am now willing to drive illigally for the rest of my life or until someone wise change the stinky system and fire all this greedy unproffessional officers.

Well, I know a few people who passed their first time, but are outweighed by the number of people I know who had to keep going back.
I had a torn ligament in my ankle when I did my drivers, and being afraid of not getting another appointment in time, I went and did it with an automatic.
Now, an automatic has no clutch, just a footrest to the left. Yet I had marks deducted for keeping my foot on the clutch and not changing gear.
These people are supposed to be Traffic Officers, yet they don t even understand the difference between an Auto or Manual. She even asked me if I was doing my license with an Automatic or Manual, to which I replied Automatic.
Things like this just annoy me. It s fine if a person makes a mistake. Atleast try and educate the testers And before I get flamed, I do understand that not all Traffic Officers are like this, and that some of them are very professional and understanding.

One thing i can say is that the traffic dept in south africa is really . man i tell u no one knows what dey doin. i feel like goin overseas to get an international licence and then drive in sa. It sounds crazy but it is easier than getting through those ppl that work in sa traffic dept.. Very frustrated..

If you read the above you will see how hard it is to get a license in South Africa. You can, of course, try to get an illegal one, but suppose you become involved in a crash or even something worse while in south Africa, how will the police treat a false identity. Think about that. Your career could go down the drain. You might wind up in jail. Is it worth it.
Measure that against the cost of getting a license legally in the Netherlands.

Fake DL are dangerous. if you get caught by the metro or any other police authority, you shall get really bad. i mean why get a fake licence anyways. If you get caught with a fake licence, its much worse than driving without a licence. unless you are underage and want to get into clubs or something.

i agree with you Suzi- I gave ny driving school almost R8000 for my license.Afterwards they told me that the call centre had no bookings. I then decided to contacted the call centre and i was placed on a waiting list.Within 3 weeks i got a call back with a test date at Benoni test station.My driving school lied to be just to get my money.They really got me frustrated with the system by not telling me the truth.On the day of my test they were no where to be found they had vanished.I had to hire car from another driving school.OOPS. . i failed my test but no stress i will try again and see what happens next time..

My view is that corruption starts with an individiuall not wanting to follow the rules.We all have to understand that the demand for drivers license has dramatically increased.For some people they really do not need their drivers license- you find that almost 80 of people whom obtain their drivers license do not really drive, they have packed away their licenses.Anyway that is not an issue.
The real corruption starts with the driving school instructors-they want to absorb as much money from your pocket as possible.In most cases they claim to have inside contacts but when you really ask them for furher info you will find that it is smoke screen.These driving schools need to be put on a stand and they need to take accountability for draining our pockets.One driving school instructor told me that i needed to pay him R2500 in order for me to pass the tets. I refused to pay that money and i went ahead with my tests - he told me i stood no chance of passing my test if i did not give him the money.To my supprise i passed my test and the examiner did not ask me for a cent.In esence he wanted to pocket the money for himself and latter claim that he had given the money to the examiner.
